Product description
Top-grain vegetable-tanned cowhide: This sheet is crafted from genuine veg-tanned cowhide with a natural veg tan finish on the grain side. It’s intended for makers who want authentic leather suitable for tooling, carving, stamping, dyeing and other leathercraft techniques.
Ready for handcrafting: The hide is easy to cut, shape, tool, carve, stamp, engrave, dye and wet-mold. Common uses include wallets, belts, sheaths, straps, keychains, patches, notebook covers and a range of handmade leather goods that require reliable tooling response and form-holding.
Single solid leather panel: Each sheet presents a smooth, natural grain face and a suede-like flesh back. There is no fabric liner, no bonded layer and no synthetic backing — just full leather thickness for a firm, natural feel.
Sizes and thickness choices: Available size options are approximately 11.8 × 11.8 in and 11.8 × 23.6 in. Thickness selections correspond roughly to 4–5 oz and 9–10 oz ranges (check the chosen variation for exact measurements). Each purchase includes one individual sheet.
Natural leather characteristics: Genuine vegetable-tanned hide may exhibit slight color shifts, grain differences, small natural marks or minor thickness variation. These are normal, not defects, and contribute to the unique character of each panel.
Pros
- True full-hide veg-tan with smooth tooling surface
- Solid single-sheet construction, no bonded backing
- Cuts, stamps and dyes predictably for craft projects
Cons
- Usually shipped tightly rolled, may need time to flatten
- Natural marks and color variation are common
- Sold as one sheet per pack, not multiple panels
VerdictA robust, true veg-tan cowhide panel that performs well for tooling, stamping and wet forming. The single-sheet construction (no bonded or fabric backing) gives projects an authentic leather feel and reliable structure. Expect slight natural variation in color and grain; the piece cuts, stamps and dyes consistently and is well suited to wallets, belts, sheaths and other small-to-medium leather goo

Ideal thickness for a knife sheath
Bought the larger sheet to craft a knife sheath; the thickness was just right. After casing it remained workable, cut cleanly, punched well, and kept its shape after wet forming. Very happy with the finished sheath.

Even thickness, excellent for stamping and dye
This veg-tan piece had a consistent gauge. I dampened it before tooling and the impressions came out sharp. Dye applied evenly without blotching. I made a belt pouch and still had usable material left over.

Hesitant at first, arrived nearly flawless and well rolled
I was unsure at first, but the sheet arrived rolled (not creased) and without damage. Thickness seemed even, the grain face was clean, and there was only slight discoloration on an exposed strip from oxidation. It’s firm without being overly stiff and generously sized. I haven’t long-term tested dye fastness yet, but it cut smoothly and the stamping I tried stayed crisp after drying. Very pleased with the overall quality.

Good tooling leather for wallets
I work on tooling projects and wanted a thinner hide for a billfold. I chose the 1.7–2.0mm option in the larger sheet size and got a defect-free, light-colored panel. A corner wetted well and accepted a stamp cleanly. It arrives tightly rolled, so I let it rest a few days to flatten. Origin wasn’t labeled, but the leather performs nicely.
