Product description
Purpose and use: This tool is made to measure the internal temperature of compost heaps and the warmth of garden soil so you can time turning, moisture adjustments, and harvesting. It reads the core temperature of deep piles and helps determine when to seed or transplant by checking soil warmth.
What’s included and dimensions: The package contains a single 16-inch probe thermometer with an integrated dial. The long probe reaches deep into piles and large bins to sample center temperatures that short probes cannot.
Materials and construction: The probe and shaft are constructed from 304-grade stainless steel for corrosion resistance and outdoor longevity. The face is fully waterproof and treated to resist fogging, keeping the dial legible through rain and humidity.
Display and performance: A large, color-segmented dial (blue/green/red) gives an immediate visual cue to activity levels, turning complex numbers into easy-to-read zones. Readings register quickly — typically within about 30 seconds — so you can check multiple locations with minimal delay.
Applications and limitations: Best used with deep compost piles, large composters, farm systems, and deep garden beds. The 16-inch probe is not recommended for compact tumblers, shallow containers, or most indoor seed-starting trays. Note that this instrument measures temperature only and does not provide moisture readings.
Pros
- Durable 304 stainless-steel probe
- Waterproof, fog-resistant color dial
- Long 16-inch reach for deep piles
Cons
- Probe is thin and should be handled gently
- Too long for small tumblers or shallow bins
- Does not measure moisture
VerdictThis 16-inch stainless compost thermometer delivers clear, fast temperature readings for deep piles and large beds. The waterproof, fog-resistant color dial makes heat levels easy to interpret at a glance, while the 304-grade probe stands up to outdoor use. It’s ideal for farm-scale composting or large bins but is oversized for small tumblers or shallow containers. Expect straightforward, dependab

Accurate inside a tumbler
Using this in a compost tumbler started in winter; though it’s freezing outside the internal temps stayed around 50°F or higher, so it’s doing a reliable job.

Works for finishing potting mixes
So far it does the job. I use it when finishing soil for indoor medical cannabis to confirm it cooled below 100°F, ideally under 80°F. The probe feels a bit slender but if handled carefully it holds up. Others reported the top cracking after long outdoor exposure; after two months I’ve checked five 55-gallon totes without problems.
