“I Can’t Believe It’s a Green Smoothie” — A Kid-Friendly Green Smoothie Recipe
My boys could drink smoothies all day, as long as the color and flavor suit their fancy. Over the years I’ve made strawberry, mango, and blueberry smoothies so often that when I suggested a green smoothie they immediately asked, “What makes it green?” When I replied, “baby spinach,” they pretty much freaked out. Josh and Simon are teenage boys who usually eat anything put in front of them — except, apparently, anything labeled a spinach green smoothie.

Determined to convince them that spinach and smoothies can be a perfect pair, I developed a green-colored smoothie that any kid — or adult — would want to drink. I tested ideas and gathered feedback from my community, then refined the recipe until the flavor and texture felt just right: bright, fruity, and pleasantly sweet, with only a subtle hint of greens.

The final result didn’t taste “green” to me — it tasted fruity, creamy, and refreshing.

How did the boys react? Josh loved it, Simon was lukewarm (he’s not a fan of kiwi, so that may have been the deal-breaker), and a friend who joined our taste test drank every drop. I’ll definitely make this smoothie again — probably sharing it with Josh while blending up a different version for Simon. It’s simple, quick, and versatile enough to suit different tastes.

The ingredient list is short and pantry-friendly: 100% apple juice, 0% fat vanilla Greek yogurt, banana, kiwi, spinach, a touch of agave or honey, and frozen mango. The frozen mango and banana create a creamy texture and fruity sweetness that masks the spinach flavor, while the juice and yogurt add smoothness and protein.
- 1 cup 100% apple juice or orange juice
- 1 cup frozen mango chunks
- 1 kiwi, peeled and sliced
- 1 cup loosely packed baby spinach (organic if preferred)
- 1/2 to 1 ripe banana (best if peeled, sliced, and frozen)
- 1/2 cup 0%-fat vanilla Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon agave nectar or honey
- Add the juice, frozen mango, kiwi, spinach, banana, yogurt, and agave to a blender.
- Blend until smooth and well combined. Adjust thickness by adding a splash more juice or a few ice cubes.
- Pour into glasses and serve immediately with a straw.
Tips and variations: swap apple juice for orange juice for a tangier flavor, use plain Greek yogurt with a bit of vanilla extract if you prefer, or replace agave with a little maple syrup or honey. To make the texture even thicker and more filling, add a tablespoon of oats or a scoop of protein powder. For picky eaters, increase the fruit and slightly reduce the spinach until they get used to the flavor.
If you try this green smoothie, I’d love to hear how your family likes it and what tweaks you made. It’s an easy, nutritious way to sneak some greens into a breakfast or snack that feels like a treat.
