Caramelized Apple and Pulled Pork Pizza

Succulent pulled pork and crisp apple slices piled on a pizza, finished with red onion and a sweet barbecue sauce—this combination is a delightful twist on pizza night. Using an easy premade crust and leftover pork keeps the recipe quick, so it’s perfect for a weeknight when you want something special without a lot of fuss.

Why this recipe works

This pizza succeeds because it brings together several classic pairings. Pulled pork with barbecue sauce is an obvious match, and pork with apple is another well-known favorite. Apple also pairs wonderfully with cheddar cheese. Together, these elements create a layered, balanced flavor profile where savory, sweet, and tangy notes play off one another.

The pulled pork and apple act as the main attractions, while the barbecue sauce and cheddar support and amplify their flavors. Thinly sliced red onion adds a subtle sharpness that cuts through the sweetness and brightens each bite. The result is a pizza that feels both familiar and fresh.

About the ingredients

For the pork, leftover pulled pork works beautifully. In the original version I used pulled pork made with Coca-Cola, taken straight from the refrigerator and broken apart with my fingers right onto the pizza. There’s no need to preheat the meat; it will warm through as the pizza cooks. Any style of leftover pulled pork is suitable—use what you have on hand.

This recipe is flexible. Leftover pork tenderloin, pork chops, or pork loin can be chopped and used the same way. You can also substitute leftover chicken (dark or white meat) if you prefer. The key is to have cooked meat already seasoned to your liking so it complements the barbecue and apple flavors.

For the barbecue sauce, use your favorite bottle or a homemade sauce. A sweet, slightly tangy sauce pairs best here, but you can adjust the style to suit your tastes—from smoky to spicy.

When it comes to cheese, sharp cheddar is the obvious choice. I like to combine sharp cheddar with Vermont white cheddar to vary the color and texture; the white cheddar adds a milder, creamier note and improves the visual appeal compared with using only orange sharp cheddar.

Choose an apple that holds its texture when cooked. Granny Smith is an excellent option because it maintains firmness and provides a bright, tart contrast to the rich pork and sweet barbecue sauce. Slice the apple thinly so it cooks through in the short baking time without becoming mushy.

If you enjoy cooking with apple, try pairing it with savory fillings in pasta or salads as well.

Equipment

  • Pizza stone or baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 1 premade pizza crust
  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup red onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 oz pulled pork
  • 6 oz shredded sharp cheddar cheese (mix with Vermont white cheddar if desired)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a pizza stone or baking sheet in the oven while it heats so the surface is hot when the pizza goes on.
  2. Assemble the pizza directly on the preheated stone or on a prepared baking sheet in this order: pizza crust, barbecue sauce, apple slices, red onion, pulled pork, and shredded cheese.
  3. Bake at 425°F for about 10 minutes, or until the crust is golden at the edges and the toppings are heated through and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  4. Remove from the oven and let rest for a couple of minutes before slicing. Serve warm.

Notes

For the best visual and flavor balance, combine sharp cheddar with some Vermont white cheddar rather than using only orange cheddar. Thin apple slices will cook through quickly without becoming soft and allow the tartness to balance the barbecue and pork.
