Product description
How to play: Doomlings is a lively tableau-building card game in which each player grows a quirky species by playing trait cards that score points and trigger special effects. Rounds are grouped into Ages; play cards, activate abilities, and watch catastrophes reshape the table as you jockey for the highest score before the world ends.
Players and timing: The game supports 2–6 players ages 8 and up, making it suitable for families, mixed-age groups, and casual gaming evenings. Setup is quick and a full game runs roughly 20–45 minutes depending on player count and decision speed.
What’s inside: The vintage base set ships with 167 unique cards — no duplicates — so each game offers fresh combinations and surprises. The package also contains one Official Rulebook and is presented in a special Holofoil Lightning box edition that highlights select collectible cards.
Special features: Select cards are finished with Holofoil accents, and the Holofoil Lightning box contains five named Holofoil characters — Heroic, Clever, Eloquence, Endurance, and Scutes — plus one Mystery Holofoil card. Card sizes follow standard playing-card dimensions, and the set is intended for repeated play; many players choose sleeves to protect the cards from frequent handling.
Origins and reception: Doomlings launched via Kickstarter in 2021, created by two brothers after job disruption during the pandemic. The campaign attracted nearly $1 million in backing, and since launch the game has reached hundreds of thousands of players worldwide. It also received notable editorial attention in 2024 from Teen Vogue.
Gameplay mechanics: Each turn you add traits to your tableau that stack and interact, creating combo opportunities and new scoring paths. Ages introduce new twists, and Catastrophes trigger chaotic effects like forced discards or thefts, keeping the tempo unpredictable and encouraging both opportunistic tactics and long-term planning.

Cons
- Artwork may not appeal to everyone
- Cards are best played with sleeves to avoid wear
- Some outcomes are luck-driven
VerdictAn easy-to-learn, highly replayable party card game that blends light strategy with lots of player interaction. Great for family nights and casual groups, though some players may want sturdier sleeves and different artwork.

So addictive!
My partner and I have been playing this nightly since we got it. We’ve tried it with 2 and with 4 players — it’s livelier with more people but still great for two.

Good value and fun
Simple to pick up. It plays a bit like Race for the Galaxy meets Sushi Go — place cards into a tableau that usually stick around and score. Hands shift a lot, but the cards you keep create combos and endgame points. The Ages deck can cause more chaos than direct player attacks, so outcomes mix luck and planning. Card stock is decent, though I would have preferred stronger art.

Charming and family-friendly
One of my go-to quick games. It’s approachable for all ages and can be short or a bit longer depending on how deliberate players are. The art is adorable and it’s a crowd-pleaser. Cards feel sturdy but will benefit from sleeves to prevent bending or tearing.

Creative and highly replayable
We bought it for the cute illustrations and ended up absolutely hooked. After trying it a few times we played almost every evening, picked up an expansion, and then introduced it to family and friends — everyone wanted it at gatherings. The rules are clever and the design is thoughtful; we recommend it.

Perfect for friendly backstabbing
Easy party game mechanics: earn the most points by playing traits and exploiting effects. Many cards outright change scoring or let you steal from opponents. After each turn an Age can change things, and when three catastrophes occur the game ends and you total points. Rules are written on the cards, so you can teach it in minutes, yet deep chaining and sabotage strategies emerge as you play.
