Citrus lifts baked goods in a way that feels both light and celebratory. This lemon poppy seed loaf has a clean lemon flavor balanced by a subtly tender crumb and just enough texture from the seeds. It’s easy to prepare and doesn’t require a mixer—just simple mixing by hand.
This quick bread is ideal for holiday brunches like Easter or Mother’s Day, but it’s also easy enough for an everyday bake. The glaze adds a finishing touch that brightens the lemon and brings a gentle sweetness. If you’re short on time, the loaf is still delicious without the glaze.
Poppy seeds offer a slightly nutty, almost floral hint that pairs perfectly with citrus. The crumb of this loaf is moist without being heavy—somewhere between light and dense—which makes each slice satisfyingly tender and flavorful.
The glaze is very simple: sifted powdered sugar mixed with a little milk to reach the desired consistency. Add the glaze after the loaf has fully cooled so it sets nicely on top. If you prefer, skip the glaze and serve the loaf plain or dusted with a little extra powdered sugar.

How To Make Glazed Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf…
Make the loaf:
Begin by preheating the oven to 350°F and greasing a 9×5″ loaf pan. In a medium bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In a larger bowl, combine the oil and granulated sugar, then stir in the Greek yogurt, milk, lemon juice, and lemon zest.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and fold until just combined. Stir in the poppy seeds—one tablespoon gives a subtle presence, two tablespoons will be more pronounced. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake at 350°F for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the loaf to cool completely in the pan before removing and glazing.
Make the glaze:
For the glaze, sift the powdered sugar into a small bowl and add milk one tablespoon at a time, stirring to reach a pourable but not overly thin consistency. If it becomes too thin, add a little more powdered sugar; if it’s too thick, thin with a drop or two more milk. Drizzle or pour the glaze over the cooled loaf and let it set for a few minutes before slicing.
Serve slices at room temperature. The glaze helps highlight the lemon flavor and gives the loaf a pretty finish, but the bread is also delicious without it.
To Make This Lemon Poppy Seed Bread Vegan…
To adapt this loaf for a dairy-free or vegan diet, substitute the Greek yogurt and milk with non-dairy alternatives. A thick non-dairy yogurt can replace Greek yogurt to provide moisture and binding. I haven’t tested specific brands here, so choose a plant-based yogurt and milk you trust for best results.
