It’s hard to believe summer is coming to an end. Even though it stretched across nearly three months, it felt like it passed in the blink of an eye. We began with a big vacation, then put our house on the market and — unbelievably — sold it in less than 48 hours. Between packing, moving and settling into a new place, there weren’t many long stretches of free time for lounging around. Still, we tried to carve out small, meaningful moments whenever we could.

One of those small moments arrived the first night in our new home: we sat out on the back deck and had sundaes. My kids adore ice cream, and while we often enjoy scoops, we rarely pile on toppings. That night felt like a true celebration — hot fudge, butterscotch and caramel were passed around, and everyone got to customize their own sundae. It was a simple thing, but it turned an ordinary evening into something special for the whole family.

When life gets busy, it’s easy to worry that the kids will remember only big events or expensive gifts. In truth, it’s the quiet, everyday moments — laughing together on the deck, sticky fingers from a shared sundae, the simple ritual of an after-dinner treat — that tend to stick in their memories. Years from now they’ll likely recall how we sat together and enjoyed that ice cream more than the exact destinations of our vacations.
We’ve also kept a low-key tradition that the kids look forward to every year: ice cream right after “Meet the Teacher” night. It’s become a comforting routine, a small reward that marks the start of a new school year and gives us time to reconnect before schedules ramp up. This year I’m planning to keep that tradition alive at home — we’ll head back to the house, sit on the deck and pull out the Smucker’s toppings to build sundaes together.

There’s something joyful and almost ritualistic about letting each person choose their own combination of sauces and sprinkles. A few unexpected toppings can turn an ordinary day into a “Sundae Fundae.” Hot fudge and caramel add warmth and richness, while butterscotch brings a buttery sweetness that kids and adults both enjoy. You don’t need a special occasion to bring out a jar of toppings — any afternoon can become memorable with a scoop of ice cream and a little creativity.
This is the final stretch of summer, and I’m ready to banish the last of that mommy guilt I felt for not filling every day with special activities. Instead of trying to recreate a perfect summer, I’m focusing on making a few meaningful moments that matter most to our family. I plan to pull out the biggest bowls and the fanciest assortment of toppings I can find and let the kids build the biggest, gooiest sundaes they can imagine. That kind of fun doesn’t require complicated planning — just a willingness to be present and enjoy a simple treat together.
If you’re looking for easy ways to make the last days of summer feel special, consider small rituals that fit into your routine: a family picnic on the lawn, an evening walk followed by frozen treats, or a game night with sundaes as prizes. These tiny traditions are low-cost, low-effort and high on the memory scale. They give kids something to look forward to and create a sense of continuity as seasons change and schedules shift.
So, as the calendar moves toward fall, I’ll savor these last warm evenings with my family. We’ll sit on the back deck, laugh over melting ice cream, and add our favorite Smucker’s toppings to each sundae. Those moments of togetherness are what make this time of year feel full — not the hustle of plans, but the warmth of shared, simple pleasures.
What are you planning for the last days of summer? Whether it’s sundaes on the deck, a backyard campout, or a quiet afternoon of drawing and stories, consider choosing one small tradition to mark the season. It’s often those small choices that become the memories our children carry with them.
