Product description
This set contains a medium suribachi (mortar) and a wooden surikogi (pestle) crafted from Japanese cypress. The mortar measures approximately 7.4 inches in diameter and stands about 3.03 inches tall. The combined weight is roughly 1.65 pounds, and the full capacity is about 23.7 fluid ounces.
The bowl is ceramic with a glossy exterior finish and internal ripple ridges designed to increase friction and keep ingredients at the bottom while crushing or grinding. The wooden pestle fits the bowl and is intended for manual crushing and pressing. The set is intended for use with seeds, herbs, roots such as Chinese yam, and other similar foods.
Produced by a historic Japanese pottery house that traces its roots to 1794, the current artisan spent years developing this rippled interior to improve grinding efficiency and reduce heat from friction, which helps preserve flavor. The mortar can be used by both right- and left-handed users because its ridges accommodate motion in either direction. It is microwave- and dishwasher-safe, but not suitable for direct fire or oven use. As each piece is handmade in Japan, slight differences in shape, color, and finish are to be expected.
Pros
- Rippled interior keeps ingredients at the base for efficient grinding
- Handmade Japanese pottery paired with a cypress pestle
- Microwave and dishwasher safe for easy care
Cons
- Fragile — can arrive damaged if mishandled
- Glaze and finish vary between pieces
- Not suitable for direct flame or oven use
VerdictA traditionally made Japanese mortar-and-pestle set that combines a textured ceramic bowl with a cypress pestle. The ripple pattern was refined by a seventh-generation potter to keep ingredients on the bowl floor and speed grinding while producing less heat. It’s a useful tool for grinding sesame, herbs, roots and other soft-to-medium items, and it suits both right- and left-handed use. Be aware t

Truly excellent for purees
Effortless to use and yields very flavorful purées that my blenders don’t match. A treasured piece added to a long collection of global cookware.

Form meets function
Bought after seeing it used by a chef; the weight and finish feel substantial. The spiral grooves are captivating and the mortar is very practical. I expect many years of reliable use from this traditional tool.

Poor quality control
Very disappointed. The pestle pictured was missing and the glaze looked sloppy. Not what I expected for the price.

A gorgeous functional bowl
This piece arrived beautifully wrapped with bilingual tags. The wooden pestle works well against the scored interior. Hard seeds need effort, but it performs excellently for softer mixes like dips and pastes. Elegant and useful.

Well made and gift-ready
Authentic craftsmanship and attractive packaging make this a lovely present. It replaced an older mortar I used for macrobiotic cooking and is perfect for preparing proper miso soup now.

Simple and reliable
Easy to operate and well finished. I use it exclusively for grinding toasted sesame so flavors don’t contaminate other tools.
